The young Arnold Schoenberg came of age during the twilight of Romanticism. In his earliest work he sought to combine the lush harmonies of Wagner with the masterful craftsmanship of Brahms, beginning a lifelong journey to create, in the words of his student Leon Kirchner, “a personal cosmos, a verdant world in continuity with tradition.''
